Alumni Spotlight: Jazz and Rose turn Passion into Practice with Safe Hands Counselling
For Jazz Malam and Rose McDonald, studying for their DipHE in Counselling at University Centre Peterborough was the beginning of a transformative journey—both personally and professionally. Their experiences have shaped their careers, ultimately leading them to establish their own private practice, Safe Hands Counselling.
Jazz was drawn to the programme’s emphasis on personal reflection and deep theoretical exploration. As a single parent, she appreciated the course’s flexibility, allowing her to balance her studies with family commitments. For Rose, relocating to her hometown made the University Centre’s accessible location an appealing choice.
Throughout their studies, Jazz and Rose agreed that they found the support system invaluable. With regular one-to-one tutorials, accessible student services, and the unwavering guidance of their tutors, Caspar and Cal, created an environment where they felt both academically and emotionally supported. The tutors’ expertise and encouragement provided a “safe holding space” for students to navigate the challenges of self-discovery and academic growth, helping them emerge as confident and competent counsellors.

The foundation Jazz and Rose developed at University Centre Peterborough allowed them to refine their approaches and identify areas for specialisation, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), childhood experience, trauma, anxiety, menopause and the integration of breathwork into sessions. They’ve also expanded Safe Hands Counselling beyond one-to-one therapy, offering community mental health workshops and workplace support services.
Reflecting on their journey, Jazz and Rose offer invaluable advice to aspiring counsellors, emphasising the importance of embracing individuality, leaning on peers and mentors and taking calculated risks. Starting a private practice comes with moments of doubt and uncertainty, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges. For them, seeing the positive impact of their work on clients serves as a constant reminder of the privilege and fulfilment counselling brings.
Through their dedication and shared vision, Jazz and Rose have turned their time at University Centre Peterborough into the foundation of a flourishing practice. Their story is a testament to the power of collaboration, perseverance and the transformative journey of becoming a counsellor.
