University Centre Peterborough to Launch New Engineering Degree Focused on Green Energy
University Centre Peterborough (UCP) is excited to announce the launch of a new Engineering degree* in September 2025, which will focus on the rapidly expanding field of energy engineering.
This innovative programme will equip students with essential knowledge and skills in renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and sustainable technologies, preparing them for careers that support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
A key component of the new degree is a module on energy storage systems, covering technologies such as battery storage and hydrogen energy—two critical solutions for balancing the UK’s energy demands and achieving the country’s 2050 net-zero target. The government has placed a high priority on green energy solutions, with significant investment being directed into areas like hydrogen as both an energy source and storage medium.
Grant Webb, Curriculum Leader for Engineering at UCP, who has been instrumental in developing the degree, shares: “The course will introduce students to well-established renewable energy sources, but also emerging technologies like energy storage systems. Hydrogen, in particular, has garnered significant attention from governments and industries as a potential game-changer for energy production and storage, as well as a fuel source for zero-emission vehicles. Our students will gain the knowledge and understanding needed to contribute to these fast-evolving sectors and meet future skills demands.”
“The UK’s current energy infrastructure cannot fully support hydrogen as a fuel source for FCEV at scale, which is what my research aims to address. My PhD explores whether the UK’s energy grid can support green hydrogen production for use in FCEV while maintaining grid stability. It’s a complex issue, but one that will be crucial for the future of our energy systems.”
This new engineering degree represents UCP’s commitment to staying at the forefront of green technologies and energy innovation. By offering education that aligns with the UK’s green industrial revolution, UCP is ensuring its graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of industries committed to sustainability and achieving net-zero goals.
