From Early Passion to Green Pioneer: Grant Webb Leads Modern Engineering Evolution at UCP for National Engineering Day

4 November 2026

To mark National Engineering Day and National Green Careers Week, University Centre Peterborough (UCP) is highlighting the career journey of Grant Webb, Engineering Course Leader and researcher, as he works to solve critical UK energy challenges while inspiring the next generation of engineers.

Grant’s path into the profession began early, inspired by his father, who was also an engineer. Growing up with a hands-on passion for building and designing, Grant turned that lifelong interest into a dynamic career spanning both industry and higher education.

As the engineering landscape evolved, Grant adapted his expertise to match the rapid industry-wide shift towards sustainability. Currently undertaking a PhD set for completion in 2028, Grant’s research targets a vital hurdle in the UK’s transition to clean transport.

His decision to move into education was driven by a commitment to mentor future talent while actively dismantling long-standing stereotypes about the profession. “The single biggest misconception the public still holds about modern engineering is that it’s a male-dominated industry.” Grant added, “The reality is that modern engineering is increasingly diverse, collaborative and accessible to anyone driven by innovation and problem-solving.’

With National Green Careers Week drawing attention to sustainable career paths, Grant emphasises the unique global flexibility and impact an engineering qualification offers young people.
“Engineering gives you a globally recognised qualification that lets you travel and work anywhere in the world.”
