Animal Studies Students Explore Cambridge Museum of Zoology

9 December 2025

Students from the Animal Studies department recently undertook a field trip to the renowned Museum of Zoology at the University of Cambridge.

The museum, which houses one of the most important collections of animal specimens in the UK, provided the students with direct access to an extraordinary array of exhibits showcasing the scale and diversity of the animal kingdom.

The visit highlighted the breadth of zoological history and biodiversity. Students were immediately struck by the sheer magnitude of specimens, including the colossal fin whale suspended from the ceiling and the impressive skeleton of the extinct giant ground sloth.

Further exploration revealed delicate and diverse insect collections, alongside rare preserved specimens of birds, reptiles, and mammals. The students also examined historic material linked to pioneering naturalists, offering a glimpse into the foundational work of modern evolutionary science. These encounters served as powerful illustrations of evolutionary concepts and species adaptation.

This field trip exemplifies how University Centre Peterborough’s Animal Courses integrate experiential learning to deliver a profound educational benefit. More than a simple observation exercise, this immersive experience is strategically designed to translate classroom theories into tangible understanding.
