BA to MRES: History & Archaeology Graduate To Study For A Masters Degree In Archaeological Science

22 November 2023

Julie Gray, BA (Hons) History & Archaeology graduate of University Centre Peterborough (UCP), has progressed to postgraduate study, enrolling on the MRes Archaeological Science course within the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Nottingham.

Julie commends her experience of studying at UCP, sharing, “Being a mature student out of education for many years, I quickly felt included and respected by not just my classmates, but all other staff and students I came into contact with. The smaller class sizes, lectures and seminars were very inclusive, and all participants were encouraged to debate their points of view. Feedback on written work was also readily available, and supported by fast responses from course lecturers”.

Julie continued, “What’s more, as a COVID-era student, every effort was made to ensure we still had a good student experience and could access pastoral support as and when required”.

Julie gained a wealth of experience during her time at UCP, having been the class representative for all three years of the course, a Student Ambassador in her final year, Chair of Peterborough’s Fane Road Archaeology Group, and an osteology volunteer with the Peterborough Museum Archives.

As such, she made many exciting memories, sharing, “I really enjoyed the experimental archaeology classes, firing pots and flint snapping. Winning an award at the Social Science Conference, and representing UCP at a presentation in the Netherlands were moments I’ll never forget. But, what will remain most memorable, is coming away with new friends”.

When asked what advice she would give to individuals considering pursuing higher education at University Centre Peterborough, Julie shared, “A small and local institution should never be discounted. Having since had the opportunity to discuss courses and teaching with people from other institutions, I can confidently say that UCP prepares and supports you in a way that most places do not. Small does not mean inferior”.

Congratulations Julie, on behalf of University Centre Peterborough, and the wider Inspire Education Group. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours.
