Student Finance
To pay for your studies you may be eligible for a student finance loan from student finance england. Your eligibility for this depends on if you have studied a higher education course before, your age, your nationality or residency status. For full information on eligibility see https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies
The easiest way to apply for student finance is online at www.gov.uk/student-finance. Applications for academic year 25/26 and 26/27 are now open. It can take a minimum of six to eight weeks to process your application, so you should apply for student finance as soon as possible.
- When you apply for student finance funding, please use institution code FFCH and institution name ‘University Centre Peterborough’ for all higher education within the Inspire Education Group.
- If you are undecided on a course or provider you can still apply, just put down your preferred choice and you can update this up to September. From September the provider is able to update this for you.
You can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of the tuition fees. Tuition fees are not means-tested so your household income does not affect your entitlement and you will be entitled to the full amount. Student Finance England pays the fees directly to University Centre Peterborough and you do not need to pay any fees upfront.
Maintenance loan
Full-time and part-time students can apply for a maintenance loan to help with living costs such as accommodation, food, bills, transport, study resources and books. The Student Loans Company will pay the maintenance loan directly into your bank account over three instalments.
The amount of maintenance loan you are entitled to will depend on your personal circumstances, mode of study (face-to-face, blended or online), household income, your age, what year of study you are in, and whether you are living at home or away from home. These levels are determined by the government and not set by UCP.
To calculate what you might be entitled to, you can visit www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator (this is not an application).
Other financial support
In addition to a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan, you may also be eligible for one of the following sources of financial help:
- Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
(there may be funding to ensure we can put support in place) - Childcare Grant – https://www.gov.uk/childcare-grant
(85% of approved childcare costs = up to £193.62 per week for one child or up to £331.95 for two or more children) - Parents’ Learning Allowance https://www.gov.uk/parents-learning-allowance
(between £50 to £1,963 to help with course related costs) - Adult Dependants’ Grant https://www.gov.uk/adult-dependants-grant
(up to £3,438)
The figures above are for students studying in the 2024/25 academic year. Our Student Support team can help advise you on an individual basis so you receive what you are entitled to. Please refer to the Financial Support section on the website for more information.
Both the tuition fee loan and maintenance loan are combined together to make your student finance loan. You do not start to pay back any of your student finance until the April after you have graduated (or if you withdraw from your course). If you do decide to withdraw you must contact student support who can advise on fee liability.
The amount you pay back is linked to your earnings. You will only start repaying when your income is over £25,000 a year. The amount is taken monthly from your wages the same way as income tax or national insurance. If you are self-employed you pay when you complete your annual tax returns. The table below gives you an indication of what your repayments could look like based on your yearly income before tax.
| Income each year before tax | 9 % will be deducted from | Monthly repayment (approx) |
| £25,000 | £0 | £0 |
| £30,000 | £5,000 | £37.50 |
| £35,000 | £10,000 | £75 |
| £40,000 | £15,000 | £112.50 |
| £45,000 | £20,000 | £150 |
If you have not paid back all the student finances after 30 years this is then written off.
You are able to self fund your course. If you are self funding you will need to pay ⅓ of the course fees for that academic year on enrolment. The remaining fees should then be paid in two remaining instalments by the end of March.
If you are being sponsored by your employer on enrolment we will need the sponsorship letter from your employer. Please see the template for this, which includes everything which needs to be included, here.
